Recap – A Demonstration of Creative Image-making Through Photography

DuCret School of Art welcomed the Westfield Art Association to its historic facility on Sunday, March17 and the lovely Parvathi Kumar presented her photography and her creative process.

Members of the art association, friends, and art students enjoyed her very detailed and informative presentation. Despite some technical difficulties the artist was both encouraging and open. Sharing her journey from a Minolta single lens reflex camera to her struggles with digital photography, Parvathi identified with her audience whether or not they were photographers at all. Everyone in the audience was engaged by her fascinating presentation, and she was very willing to answer many of the questions that the audience members had.

Her art was placed throughout reception rooms and attendees could enjoy both Parvathi’s work and the works on display at the art school.
The duCret School of Art proved to be a beautiful and inspiring setting and we look forward to enjoying future Westfield Art Association events together in the future!

Parvathi Kumar Fine Art Photography

Parvathi Kumar was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia and raised in Montreal, Quebec. Her mother initiated her into the art of photography as a teen, giving her a strong foundation in manual 35mm film SLR techniques. Parvathi also gained valuable black&white darkroom experience in high school. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Concordia University in Montreal, a Master’s degree in Computer Science from NJIT in Newark, and has worked for ten years in software design & development for IT firms in Denmark, CT and NJ. Throughout this time however, photography prevailed as a serious interest.

After many years of using only a manual Minolta x700 35mm camera, 2003 marked her foray into the digital world. In 2010 her lifelong love of photography turned into a proper business devoted to various photographic services and she began actively exhibiting her work in both group and solo shows throughout NJ. In 2013, she started using the iPhone as an integral tool of creativity. Her images (using Nikon DSLRs and the iPhone) have been selected and won top awards in various juried shows. She is a member of various artists’ groups and forums, collaborates with other artists in the community, helps other adults, teens and youngsters learn the art of photography through workshops and photo walks, and shares her work frequently on social media. She also creates fine art work with mixed media & alternative processes such as encaustics and cyanotype printing.

Parvathi has trained in Indian Classical Dance (Bharata Natyam), has been learning and playing Classical Guitar for over 30 years and is involved with the NJ Classical Guitar Society, and she is a certified yoga instructor. She currently lives in Bridgewater, NJ with her husband and two sons.

‘About Face’ Show Reception

All are invited to join our members in celebrating our new exhibition at South Avenue Arts with a reception on Sunday, January 20th, 1-3pm. The exhibition is on view now and will remain up through 1/29 .

ABOUT FACE:  These two words can simply mean “Pertaining to the face or front of someone or something”. It is also a common expression as in “A complete change of opinion or policy; or a turn made as to face the opposite direction.

Either way this theme is taken, we know artists have such distinct ways of representing the same underlying theme within their works that we can expect to see a varied array of art and we will be able to compare the methods and journeys artists use to convey the same underlying theme.  The artworks that are inspired by “About Face” may prove to comment on our turbulent times or give us cause to turn in the opposite, more introspective direction.
