GUIDELINES FOR ARTISTS EXHIBITING AT OVERLOOK MEDICAL CENTER
The purpose of these guidelines is to provide parameters and set expectations for the
exhibition of works of art at Overlook Medical Center (OMC). These guidelines apply to
all artworks of any type displayed at OMC for any purpose, including artwork that is
available for sale, is associated with fundraising activities, or that comprises or becomes
a part of OMC’s permanent collection.
Our goals in displaying artwork at OMC are to provide a welcoming, supportive, and
inclusive environment for all staff and patients, as well as to promote a culture of
healing, health, wellness, and humanism in medicine. Through the artwork we display,
OMC endeavors to build community, celebrate culture, promote mindfulness, create
spaces of respite, and foster collaborative exchanges among those who walk our halls.
While we acknowledge that, in other contexts, art may play an important controversial or
provocative role, the artwork displayed at OMC is not intended for any such purposes.
Accordingly, artworks displayed at OMC must not contain the following elements:
• Political opinions, figures, or the like;
• Profanity, hate speech, or other
objectional language;
• Images evoking sickness, death, or
other unhealthy states or activities;
• Racially, culturally, or religiously
insensitive images;
• Any works that disparage historically
marginalized groups;
• Depictions of celebrities or public figures;
• Depictions of illegal drug use or other
illegal activity;
• Depictions of smoking cigarettes, illegal or
recreational drugs, or other substances;
• Violent images or depictions of items that
could be considered as weapons; and
• Sexually explicit imagery, nudity, or the
like.
This list is not all-inclusive. OMC reserves the right to refuse exhibition of or
remove works at will, at any time prior to or during exhibition. This means that
OMC may reject or refuse to display artwork that does not contain any of the above
elements, but that it nevertheless determines to be inappropriate, in its sole discretion.
OMC may also remove or refuse to display any artwork that is the subject of reasonable
objection by any staff member or patient, or that it otherwise finds to be inconsistent
with its objectives. There will be no process for appealing the exhibition decisions
of OMC. If removed or rejected artwork is not owned by OMC, OMC will contact the
artist (or other owner of such artwork) within a reasonable time thereafter to arrange for
return of the artwork to the artist/owner.
